An introduction to Section 4 of BS 7911/IQCS Minimum Standards for Data Collection

This document has been produced by the Interviewer Quality Control Scheme (IQCS), the body which devised the Minimum Standards for data collection. The IQCS Minimum Standards are identical in content to Section 4 of BS 7911. This pack is intended to be an introduction to this part of BS 7911, outlining the key requirements for data collection.

The data collection standards aim to ensure that companies operate to the same minimum standards in respect of the recruitment, training and supervision of individuals who undertake data collection activities, and in respect of the way in which their work is validated.

The standards cover interviewing, recruiting for groups and depths, auditing and mystery shopping - both work conducted by individuals who work out in the field (referred to as field-based work) and work conducted from telephone centres.

For ease of use, we have produced five different information sheets, one for each of the following types of data collection:

  1. Field-based interviewing
  2. Field-based recruiting for groups and depths
  3. Interviewing/recruiting from a telephone centre
  4. Mystery shopping / observational research
  5. Auditing
The Minimum Standards are structured under a number of broad headings:
  • Head office management and administration
  • Supervisors (Please see the definition in the BS7911 Glossary)
  • Project management and administration
  • Recruitment and training
  • Appraisals/performance assessment and feedback
  • Data/respondent validation
Each information sheet follows this broad structure (as and when appropriate).

Please note, these documents do not replace the full BS7911 standards document, nor the full IQCS Minimum Standards; they merely summarise the requirements. Please ensure you refer to the full Minimum Standards for more detailed information.

To help guide you through the full BS7911/IQCS data collection standards, we have added the relevant standards section number(s) after each requirement outlined.

The Minimum Standards have aimed to keep bureaucracy to a minimum. However, it is essential that adequate supporting documentation is kept and made available at the time of audits/inspections to demonstrate the standards are being adhered to. If you have any further questions about these minimum standards or would like to arrange an IQCS advisory visit please contact Gill Wareing on 01737 379 261.
